Murals
I have been creating murals in the Howard Center residential homes with the residents through the Arts Collective. The Arts Collective is an alternative arts program that promotes wellness, self-esteem, and dignity by creating a safe and nurturing space for artists to make art, exchange ideas, experience a supportive connection with other artists, and exhibit their artwork in public spaces and galleries.
I provide leadership, guidance and support to the residents, while they develop and fine-tune their own artistic skills and confidence. I photograph the artists at work and create a book in the end to distribute to the artists.

Working with the residents at the houses has been one of the highlights in my entire career as an artist. Seeing how the individuals blossomed with a little paint and imagination was special. Many of the residents haven’t painted since childhood., or ever. Giving them options for involvement in the murals allowed them to decide what capacity they wanted to contribute. I believe focusing on creativity enabled them to feel a sort of meditative calmness, a purpose, a chance to play, push through their doubts, and connect with their fellow housemates. Seeing their work on the walls gave them a sense of accomplishment, community, and empowerment. Our relationships with each other deepened as time went on , trust was built, and this perhaps was the reason we engages in real life conversations while painting. I believe art is healing, and necessary for the spirit within. Creating these murals will remain in my memories forever not only as an incredibly satisfying project, but the most meaningful collaboration I have ever accomplished.
